Today, Rwandan business enterprises are part of a global market. The country currently finds itself in a situation whereby investors and clients demand much more than the basic financial profits. Modern enterprises realize that interventions and their impacts on both the society and the environment are indeed a crucial factor for long-term and progressive sustainable growth. The "concept" of the interventions alluded to above is known as “Corporate Social Responsibility”, and is acknowledged by many enterprises as a mechanism that yields direct economic benefit. Of great interest to most stakeholders in the public and private sector is the question; how can private enterprises benefit from CSR?
BENEFITS OF CSR:
Cost-saving and increased profitability due to more efficient use of production resources and energy reduction
Higher motivation and dedication of employees, which result into higher creativity and innovativeness
Improved products and production processes and services, which result into better customer satisfaction and higher demand
Enhanced networking between business partners (private) and Government authorities (public), which brings about more access to public funds owing to improved company image
Competitive advantage and higher client appreciation, which leads to increased turnover and sales
CSR-oriented companies are valuable partners for international cooperation due to the shared themes and objectives such as
Professional skills development, in particular Capacity Building for women and youth
Standardization of products and Services
Cleaner Production and Environment Protection.
HOW CAN THE PRIVATE SECTOR BE SUPPORTED IN APPLYING CSR? THE INSTRUMENT OF PPP PROJECTS
The Private Sector Federation (PSF) in cooperation with the German Development Cooperation, implemented by GIZ, offers members of PSF an opportunity of up to 50% co-financed Public Private Partnership projects through which they can realize planned interventions specifically within the CSR framework that contribute sustainably to Rwanda’s socio-economic development.
Entrepreneurs with innovative project ideas that benefit their own business operations in ways that offer a positive and progressive impact on the society or environment of Rwanda can apply for additional financial incentives and technical support. In such a win-win situation, both partners strive for achieving their joint goals more effectively and faster by sharing the costs and risks and in complementing each other’s strengths.
